Puri Jaganandh is desperate to prove a point or so after a series of flops. This time, he has roped in action hero Gopichand for his latest film ‘Golimaar’ to test his fortunes. Let’s find out how far Puri is successful.
Story:
Ganga Ram (Gopichand) is an orphan who dreams of becoming a police. He becomes a Sub Inspector and later Nazar (D.I.G.) promotes him as an Encounter Specialist where he starts killing all the gangsters. But later, Ganga Ram comes to know that it is a game played by DIG and Khaleed (Kelly Dorjee) to destroy all their rivals. And when D.I.G. plans to encounter Ganga Ram, he escapes and turns into a gangster. How did he take revenge on DIG and other policemen, and how did he trap Khaleed eventually forms rest of the story.
Analysis:
‘Golimaar’ is made with an inspiration of a real life story of a Mumbai encounter specialist named Daya Nayak. In fact, it is a typical Puri Jaganandh film with action sequences taking centre stage. Puri is known for action films, but ‘Golimaar’ is surely not on the lines of ‘Pokiri’. Fans who are dreaming to see Gopichand in vintage can surely have a double dhamaka. Puri has focused more on action sequences with traditional twists and turns rather anything else.
The film creates an interesting plot after the interval, but lack of emotions and comedy has turned thumbs down for the film. Mind you, there’s humor mixed with action punched dialogues like in ‘’Pokiri’, but Puri could not sustain the momentum all through making the plot clearly evident. He even showcases police officers as unintelligent in many scenes.
‘Golimaar’ is on the lines of Ram Gopal Varma’s Bollywood films like Satya, Company, having all the commercial elements making the lead protagonist’s character more interesting. There are few scenes that are shot like Ram Gopal Varma (no wonder). The first half is completely packed with action, but the second half has turned the film into an average one.
Performance:
Gopichand has done exceedingly well as Ganga Ram, and he’s surely another Tollywood Akshay Kumar in the making. He has played a cop with different styles and modulations.
Priyamani is a miscasting for the role, but has done her bit to suit to her character. She plays an Event Organizer character where she and her mom hate men. Although her character rallies around Gopichand, her role is surely much better than her recent films.
Roja played Priyamani’s mom and did reasonably well. Her age can be really seen in her dialogues, which are blunt. Perhaps, its time she makes way for others.
Kelly Dorjee is apt as gangster. His role is something similar to his previous films like ‘Don’, but as you are aware, our Directors relish casting in Bollywood crew for a stylish Villain.
Nazar, MS Narayana, are adequate, but Ali did not have much role to play. He is seen only for few minutes in the second half.
Technicalities:
The Cinematography by Shyam K Naidu is very good, making the film look almost like a typical Bollywood gangster film. Re-recording and background is not great.
Dialogues are pretty good with action and humor being mixed. Songs are a big minus to the film and couple of them are a lift off from the Bollywood films.
Puri is determined to focus on action entertainer and wants to showcase Gopichand in a high-voltage exploits. He has shown that in a different style. But I have to say, he is only just half way through. ‘Golimaar’ is a Tollywood film shown in a different style, but mind you, after all it’s only an average film.
Gopichand, Priyamani starrer ‘Golimaar’ is all set to hit the screens world-wide on 27th May. The latest news is that the film is releasing with 500 prints. Golimaar is being directed by Puri Jagannath and is being produced by Bellamkonda Suresh under the banner, Sri Sai Ganesh Productions.
