Two New IPL Franchises on the way:
Mumbai: The IPL is all set to welcome two new franchises into its fold on Sunday, March 7, 12 noon. The league currently comprises eight franchises that are gearing up to lock horns in the third season of the tournament starting March 12.
The two new teams will be announced on the basis of a bidding process that has been in progress from Monday, February 22.
The new franchises will be invited to participate in the fourth season of the competition in 2011, but they will get a bird’s eye view of the league’s proceedings this season itself.
According to IPL Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi, “Under [the] Invitation to Tender, the winning bidders in respect of two locations in India will be granted the right to own and operate a new team which will compete in the IPL in each year from and including 2011 onwards. From the 2011 IPL Season onwards it is therefore anticipated that the number of teams will increase from eight to ten teams.”
The new franchises will also have a fair chance at competing in the prestigious Champions League Twenty20 competition starting the 2011 season “The two new IPL teams will enjoy the same opportunity (if applicable and subject to qualification) to compete in each and any CLT20 which is staged from 2011 onwards,” says Modi.
The base bidding price was set at USD 225 million per franchise as per an announcement made by the BCCI President Shashank Manohar earlier this year. The announcement was made after the IPL Governing Council ratified the expansion of the league.
