| This is a repeat of a first round tie in 2008 when Czech Republic was the winner in Ostrava. The Czech team, which reached the Final in 2009, leads Belgium 7-3 in their head-to-head series. Belgium's best performance came in 1904 when it finished runner-up. More recently, the Belgians reached the semifinals in 1999 and the quarterfinals in 2007. In 2009, Belgium defeated Poland in the Europe/Africa Zone before gaining promotion to the World Group with a 3-2 victory over Ukraine. The Czechs have won the title on one occasion when, in 1980, Ivan Lendl and Tomas Smid led their nation - Czechoslovakia - to victory.
