| Croatia and Ecuador will be facing each other for the first time. Croatia, benefitting from home advantage, will go into the tie as favourite with the fixture being played indoors in Varazdin. Croatia's sole Davis Cup triumph came in 2005 when Ivan Ljubicic and Mario Ancic inspired their nation to victory. In 2009, Croatia defeated Chile and USA before losing at home against Czech Republic in the semifinals. Ecuador will be making its first appearance in the World Group since 2001. Nicolas Lapentti, who has now delayed his retirement plans, was his nation's hero in the victory over Brazil in September, winning all three rubbers. Ecuador had previously defeated Canada and Peru to reach the play-offs. |
