TIE PREVIEW
France and Germany first played each other in 1913, a tie which the Germans won. France has since had the upper hand, compiling a win-loss record of 5-2. The most recent meeting - a World Group first round tie in Halle in 2006 - saw the French team take an unassailable 3-0 lead after day two. France has a rich Davis Cup pedigree having won the title nine times. Its latest triumph came in 2001 when Nicolas Escude defeated Wayne Arthurs to clinch a 3-2 win against Australia in Melbourne. In 2009, France lost to Czech Republic - the first time it has not reach the quarterfinals since 2000 - before overcoming Netherlands in the play-offs. Germany has been crowned champion three times with all the victories coming in a five-year period, in 1988, 1989 and 1993. In 2009, Germany defeated Austria in the first round before narrowly losing to Spain on clay in Marbella. With the tie level at 2-2, Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former world No. 1, recaptured his best form to defeat Andreas Beck and clinch a semifinal place for the Spaniards. |
